Kristal Bivona is chair of the Department of Classics and Humanities and an associate professor specializing in public humanities and Latin American studies. She is also the associate director of the Behner Stiefel Center for Brazilian Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic languages and literatures and an M.A. in Portuguese from UCLA, an M.A. in comparative literature from Dartmouth College, and a B.A. from San Diego State University in English with a Spanish minor. Her research focuses on visual culture from Brazil and the Southern Cone with specialization in cinema, memory studies, and art interventions in public, including memorials and street art. Dr. Bivona’s current book project, Democracy out of Focus: Brazilian Cinema after Dictatorship, connects the fields of film studies, cultural studies, and democracy studies to illuminate the relationship between audiovisual production, cultural memory, and processes of re-democratization in Brazil. Her work has been published in Luso-Brazilian Review, Memory Studies, Latin American and Latinx Visual Culture and Studies in Spanish and Latin American Cinemas.
